Light, continuous force is one of the keys to orthodontic success. Braces work by applying constant pressure to slowly move the teeth in a specific direction. Traditional metal brackets, or “braces,” work with the wire to move the teeth into their desired positions and are easy to maintain. Dr. Merissa Blais and our team at Blais Orthodontics in Scarsdale, NY offer a smaller version of the traditional metal bracket, made with the utmost precision, as to keep treatment times to a minimum and to ensure patient comfort.

A short crash course on the key components of orthodontics: metal brackets are the squares that are bonded to the front of each tooth. Brackets hold the arch wires that move your teeth during orthodontic treatment. Arch wires guide your teeth to the correct positions. Springs can be attached to the arch wires between the brackets to push, pull, or open & close spaces between your teeth. Our orthodontist may decide to attach elastics or rubber bands to the hooks on your brackets. These elastics are worn between your upper and lower teeth to move your arches against each other to achieve a perfect fit of individual teeth and a solid bite. Other treatment options are available depending on the type of movement desired.
